Solstice and Equinox figurines, Amsterdam 2021
Ballroom Projects Antwerp, B,

Ceramic with a 24 karat gold glaze.

While experiencing the lockdowns during Covid in 2020 I got inspired by the continuous cycle of the sun and the transitions of the seasons throughout the year. These transitions are marked by the solstices and equinoxes.

The spring equinox is a moment in the year when the sun is exactly above the equator and day and night are perfectly balanced in equal length. The Winter Solstice is the reversal of the sun's ebbing in the sky, in ancient times this moment was seen as the symbolic death and rebirth of the sun or of a sun god.

Throughout history, these transitions have been celebrated with rituals and ceremonies. As a kind of ritual and a personal ode to the light, I retreated into my studio with a lump of clay to make the figurines.
