Title: Ascending and Descending
Commission for the Mental Health Care Department of the LUMC, Leiden, NL, 2016

Ascending and Descending is a site-specific installation commissioned for the hall of the Mental Health Care Department at the LUMC (Leiden University Medical Center). The space was conceived as a transitional environment within the hospital, a place of passage, waiting, and reflection.

The installation consists of large-scale photographic panels combined with ink drawings mounted behind plexiglass. The images move between abstraction and landscape, evoking movement, gravity, and subtle shifts in perspective. The title refers both to physical movement, rising and falling and to emotional states experienced within a medical context.

By integrating photography and drawing into the architectural setting, the work seeks to create a quiet, contemplative atmosphere within a clinical environment.

Medium: Photographic installation, panels, ink drawings, plexiglass
Documentation photography: Gertjan van Rooij
